Help and support
Answers to the questions players ask most. If yours is not here, write to support@greychess.com.
Getting started
What is GreyChess?
A chess study app. Open a PDF or ePub chess book you own and every diagram becomes a live board beside the page. It also reads boards from screenshots and photos, reviews your games, and trains you with puzzles, lessons and flashcards.
How do I sign in?
With Google or Lichess, or with your email address and a password. You can also ask for a sign-in link by email, and add a passkey once you are in. Your library and your place in each book follow you to every device you sign in on.
Which devices does it work on?
Any up-to-date browser on a computer, tablet or phone. You can install it as an app: in Chrome or Edge, choose Install from the address bar or the menu; on an iPhone or iPad, choose Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Does it work offline?
Scanning a board needs an internet connection, because GreyChess completes every scan on its server. Once the app is installed, your library, books, training and analysis keep working offline.
Reading books
Which books work?
Any PDF or ePub you own, including books whose diagrams are printed as images, like most chess books. Diagrams in standard chess fonts are read from the PDF’s text. Screenshots, photos of a board, web pages and paused videos work too.
A diagram was read wrongly. How do I fix it?
Squares the scanner isn’t sure of are circled, so check those first. Tap the pencil to fix any piece, and the board updates. A diagram the search missed can be boxed by hand, and any box can be moved, resized or removed.
Can GreyChess read my book aloud?
Yes. A page or chapter can be read aloud in the book’s language by your device’s voices, with the moves spoken in words.
Can I make a course from a book?
Yes. Choose a chapter and its diagrams become positions to learn, each answered by the book’s own move, then flashcards until you know them. A coach can set one as homework.
Plans and payments
Is GreyChess free?
You can start free, with daily limits. Pro scans more of your books each day, scans pages ahead, and adds features Free doesn’t have, such as repertoire practice and every key endgame. Prices are shown above.
How do I pay, and does it renew?
Through Razorpay, with UPI, a card, net banking or a wallet, for a month or a year. A one-time payment doesn’t renew: you won’t be charged again unless you pay again or choose automatic payments.
What happens when my plan ends?
You’re back on the Free plan. Your library, books and training are all kept; only the daily limits change.
How do I get a refund, or stop automatic payments?
Cancellations and refunds explains when a payment is refunded and how to stop automatic payments. For a payment problem, write to the support address with the invoice number from your receipt.
Coaches and academies
How do I set GreyChess up for my academy?
Academies are arranged with the team, so write to the support address with how many students you teach. Everyone in an academy has Pro, with classes, homework, live lessons and monthly reports.
Can my students use it without an email address?
Yes. An academy can make accounts for its students, who then sign in with the details their coach gives them.
Privacy and your account
Where does my data go?
Books and images you open stay on your device: your browser turns each board into numbers, and GreyChess works out the position from those. Your account keeps your library in sync, with a small image of each diagram you save. Positions go to Lichess only when you open one there, or turn on online lookups.
How do I download or delete my data?
Open your account page from the account menu. Download my data gives you a copy of your account, synced library and classes in one file. Delete account deletes the account and its synced library, and stops any automatic payments first.
Can I use it during a game?
No. GreyChess is for study, and the terms of use forbid help during any game.
