About GreyChess

GreyChess is a chess study app built around the books players already own. Open a PDF or ePub, and every diagram becomes a live board beside the page, with the book’s own moves on it.

Why GreyChess exists

Books are still where most players go to learn the game in depth: the openings, the endgames, the great games explained. But reading one means setting up every diagram by hand on a board or in an app, and losing your place each time.

GreyChess puts the board beside the page instead. It finds the diagrams as you read, reads each one into a board, and fits the moves printed after it, so you play through the book rather than copy it. The same reader works on a screenshot, a photo of a board or a paused video.

What GreyChess does today

  • Reads PDF and ePub chess books with a live board beside every diagram, and reads the pages aloud.
  • Turns a chapter’s diagrams into a course of positions to learn, then flashcards until you know them.
  • Runs Stockfish 18 in your browser, and opens any position on Lichess with its moves.
  • Reviews your own games from Lichess and Chess.com, from brilliant moves to blunders.
  • Trains you with 33,146 rated puzzles in 72 themes, 84 lessons in 8 topics (27 of them free), 399 studies and flashcards that come back when you are about to forget them.
  • Gives chess academies classes, homework, live lessons and reports for their students.

How we work

  • Your books stay yours. A book you open stays on your device. To read a diagram, your browser turns it into numbers, and only those numbers are sent.
  • Checked before it ships. Every lesson’s positions and answers are checked by the rules, the endgame tablebase or the engine.
  • Paid for by players. GreyChess is paid for by the players and academies who choose Pro. Free has daily limits.
  • Plain chess words. The app uses the words players already know from Lichess and Chess.com: accuracy, blunders, time trouble, candidates.
