Make a chess course from any chapter of your book
Reading a chapter once is not learning it. GreyChess turns its diagrams into positions to solve, answered by the book’s own moves, and brings them back until you know them.
From a chapter to positions to learn
Choose a chapter from the book’s bookmarks, or pages by number. Each page is read once and remembered: its diagrams found and read, and its text matched to the diagram it follows. The first line that plays from a diagram sets the side to move, and the book’s move is the answer, unless the author marks it as a mistake.
Where the text gives no move, Stockfish’s is the answer, and any move it rates about as highly is accepted too. Diagrams that could not be read with certainty are left out and counted, never guessed.
Then practise until they stick
A course lists its positions with their page, practises them, and plays the answer’s line afterwards. Its positions join your flashcards ten a day, scheduled so each comes back just before you would forget it.
For coaches
A coach can set a course as homework for a class, and see who did it and who found each answer first time.
Questions
Which chapters can become a course?
Any chapter of a PDF chess book, chosen from its bookmarks or by page numbers, up to 60 pages at a time.
Whose move is the answer?
The book’s, where its text gives one and does not mark it as a mistake; otherwise Stockfish’s. Moves the engine rates about as highly are accepted too.
