Paste a screenshot, drop a photo, or point the browser extension at a web page or a paused YouTube lesson. GreyChess reads the position, asks only about the squares it is unsure of, and hands you a board you can trust.
Read, then check
The reading appears beside the picture, with doubtful squares ringed. Fix one in a tap and confirm. Nothing is analysed, looked up, opened elsewhere or saved until you do, so a misread piece never reaches your study.
Edit the position freely: the side to move, castling rights and any square. A diagram cannot show whether castling is still allowed, so it stays off until you say so.
Then take it anywhere
A confirmed board is a starting point.
- Copy the FEN or the PGN, with any moves you played.
- Open it on Lichess’s analysis board, at the move you were looking at.
- Analyse it with Stockfish 18 in your browser, or hide the engine and let it grade your move.
- Save it to your library, or train its key move as a flashcard.
On web pages and videos
The GreyChess extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox lights up the boards on a page: click one, drag a box around it, or right-click an image. On YouTube, a knight button in the player reads the paused frame. It refuses to work during live games on Lichess and Chess.com.

How do I get the FEN of a chess diagram?
Paste or drop the picture into GreyChess, check the squares it rings, confirm, and copy the FEN from the board’s menu.
Can it read a photo of a printed board?
It reads screenshots, scans and photos of printed diagrams and boards on screen. A clear, straight picture reads best; anything it is unsure of is ringed for you to check.
Does it work during a game?
No. GreyChess is for study. The extension stays off during live games on Lichess and Chess.com, and the terms forbid help during any game.
