Fair play online

Beginner · 5 min · Pro

No engine, no book and no friend’s help during a game; after it, analyse all you like.

Fair play online: During a game, every move must be your own.

The idea

During a game, every move must be your own.

  1. During the game, no engine, book or friend may help you.
  2. Losing on purpose to lower your rating is cheating too.
  3. After the game, analyse it any way you like.

In a game: If you think an opponent cheats, report it to the site rather than in the chat.

How the lesson begins

Online chess works only if both players play fair. During a game, the moves must be your own: no chess engine, no other person, no book or database telling you what to play. Using any of them is cheating, and chess sites close the accounts of players they catch.

After the game it is the other way. Going over it with an engine, a book or a friend is the best way to learn from it.

A question

You finish a game and want to know where you went wrong. May you look at it with an engine now?

  • Yes. Once the game is over, analyse it any way you like
  • No. Engines are never allowed
Show the answer

Yes. Once the game is over, analyse it any way you like.

Right. The rule is about the moves you play during a game. Afterwards, an engine is a great teacher.

Play it on the board

In GreyChess the lesson is played on a live board: your answers are judged as you move, and the positions to remember become flashcards.
